Gaming to Learn- Food Street

Food street is a great app to download to teach kids how to mange and run a business. It is very kid friendly for upper elementary students and all ages past that. Kids will learn how to set up their own restaurant, take orders, and buy, sell, and grow food to make the customer's orders. This is a great way to relate things in the real world to learning so kids can understand it better, they can experience it first hand through this app and it allows them to try out things of their own when it comes to making a business run. In this game, your thought process consists of thinking about what orders you need, what you need to grow to make those orders, and then purchasing new items to make more food. It involves keeping track of money and gems to make sure you have enough to purchase things at each new level. This is a great game for almost any age and you are constantly learning during it!

  My name is Brenna Bleeker and I am a sophomore here at the University of Northern Iowa. I grew up in LeClaire, Iowa, a small town right along side of the Mississippi River. At home I live with my mom, dad and my older brother who is a firefighter in our hometown. Arts Integration- Hudson Elementary #2

We just finished our second week teaching second graders at Hudson Elementary school. This weeks focus was to integrate drama into our lesson. We started off by reading a book about how to recycle and in this book, there was a lot of examples of household items we can recycle every day. Some of these included plastic bottles, newspaper, cardboard tubes, paper, and so many more. Next, we laid out a bunch of items that our group brought as examples of recyclable materials and things that we could use to make our puppets. We talked through each of the materials and what they could be reused as. We then introduced the reader's theater to the kids and told them we would be creating puppets to go with each of their characters they were assigned. The kids really liked being able to create their puppets out of the materials we had available to them like egg cartons, newspaper, pipe cleaners, cardboard boxes, tape, plastic bags, and lots of other stuff. Arts Integration- Hudson Elementary

Another opportunity to teach! New school, more second graders! This experience was one of three where myself and 4 others in my class will have the opportunity to go into Hudson Elementary school and teach a group of 8 second graders about helping the environment. We will be incorporating topics like visual arts, like we did this week, drama, and music along with various others. This is a great opportunity for the kids to learn in new ways and it gives them a chance to get into smaller groups and have a more one-on-one approach to learning. To begin, we introduced ourselves and all said something we like to do outside/ something we do that deals with the environment. This was our "get to know you" activity, and it allowed all of us to share something we do within the environment. Next, we read the book The Lorax by Dr.Seuss.
