The Leader in Me Conference

I went to the Leader in Me conference on Saturday April 7th. This conference lasted from 8am-12pm and had a lot of great information to go along with it. We started the conference in one of the bigger lecture halls in Schindler, with about 100 people at the conference. There were students from UNI, Wartburg, and a few from Hawkeye Community College along with elementary school students from St.Edwards Catholic School, Orchard Hill Elementary, and Lou Henry. They had students between the ages of 2nd grade and 5th grade represented from these three schools to give presentations about each of the 7 Habits. The 7 Habits are (1) Be Proactive, (2) Begin with the End in Mind, (3) Put First Things First, (4) Think Win-Win, (5) Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood, (6) Synergize, (7) Sharpen the Saw. These habits are things that are put in place to teach kids how to be in charge of their own learning. I think that these allow kids to take on a new form of leadership, and since each child is different, I think this is great to help kids find their own skills in these areas while becoming a leader in their schools.

Since there were three schools from the Cedar Falls/ Waterloo area, we were able to see a diverse group of children that all had experienced The Leader in Me program differently in their schools. At St. Edwards, the kids that led the workshop were all a part of the lighthouse team. This is a team that gets together and is in charge of teaching the whole school about the 7 Habits through different events, posters, or things like that in their school. These students have diversity within their different job groups, they are from different grades, different classrooms, and have different interests, yet work together for the purpose of building leaders in their schools.

I think The Leader in Me can be used diversely in my future classroom and school. At the conference, these three schools that were represented, all used them in different ways. They all have the same 7 habits and the same goal in mind, but the way it is approached can be different. I think in my future classroom, I am going to have to find different ways to adapt this to all my students in order for them to find their voice and how they can be a leader.

I loved this conference and I thought that it was great to be exposed to this new method of building leaders in the future. I think that these skills are so important to be teaching kids, because they will need them later in life. If you want to learn more about this, go to http://www.theleaderinme.org/!

Introduction- About Me!

My name is Brenna Bleeker and I am a sophomore here at the University of Northern Iowa. I grew up in LeClaire, Iowa, a small town right along side of the Mississippi River. At home I live with my mom, dad and my older brother who is a firefighter in our hometown. I enjoy spending time with my family and extended family because I have so many cousins, aunts and uncles in my family. I enjoy doing crafty things and being artsy every once in a while. Once of my favorite things is just being around my friends and hanging out with them, watching movies, or going out to eat. Baking with my mom is one of my favorite things, which means my favorite dessert is homemade cookies! I decided to come to the University of Northern Iowa because the idea of going to a college that had a focus on teaching was pretty perfect to me. This is my first blog so come on my journey of teaching!

Arts Integration- Hudson Elementary

Another opportunity to teach! New school, more second graders! This experience was one of three where myself and 4 others in my class will have the opportunity to go into Hudson Elementary school and teach a group of 8 second graders about helping the environment. We will be incorporating topics like visual arts, like we did this week, drama, and music along with various others. This is a great opportunity for the kids to learn in new ways and it gives them a chance to get into smaller groups and have a more one-on-one approach to learning. To begin, we introduced ourselves and all said something we like to do outside/ something we do that deals with the environment. This was our "get to know you" activity, and it allowed all of us to share something we do within the environment. Next, we read the book The Lorax by Dr.Seuss. This is a classic book by Dr. Seuss that has a lot to say about taking care of our environment. The second graders had watched the movie already, so...

Teacher Portfolio

Take a look at my teacher portfolio! Last semester (Fall 2017), I spent a majority of my time working on this portfolio for my Ed Tech and Design class. This class allowed me to take a closer look at some of the details and work that goes into creating lessons and being able to use technology to do so. We used a lot of technology based learning, and it allowed me to see different ways to communicate with other educators around me. the first page is all about me and why I want to become an educator! It has some great ideas for a thematic unit, web quest, and even some interactive learning tools. Visit this link to explore my portfolio. Teacher Portfolio
